My interest in QR codes is more focused on marketing than production applications. Specifically I am looking for examples relating to mobile phones than stand alone scanners.
I am interested in QR codes being used for marketing also. We just learned about this technology and are very interested in getting familiar with the technology and when best to apply it to direct mail pieces, etc. Has anyone used these already, and if so do you have any repsonse numbers? I'd be very curious!
Jason,
QR codes can be used for a multitude of applications. Basically your printed paper becomes an interactive media used to launch your browser based mobile phone to any landing page of your choosing. This could be a PURL, a GURL , a youtube video or a basic URL (like an amazon order site or home page). Rather than focus on response rates at this point I think the important thing is to be early adopters of this thechnology to gain access to the mobile phone generation where text messaging, emailing and browsing all take place in the palm of the hand. If you want print to get relevant to this generation the pathway is through the phone. QR Codes get you there.
I can't go into much detail but we are currently discussing the application of this technology with a manufacturer of consumer electronic devices on POS literature. The US consumer is lagging in their adoption of this technology in part due to the majority of mobile devices in use do not support the visual bar code technology....yet.
Thanks for the reply Tim. Keep me posted as time allows you to reveal more information. I agree this application is lagging here in the US but I am convinced it will be common place sooner rather than later. We have already discovered some very cool applications that I will reveal soon. Right now the challenge is to get the mobile phones app ready. The marketplace will catch on fire once the phones are ready.
I agree, let me know if you have figured out how to quantify the tipping point. :-) We do a lot of work for a state univeristy near us and they are also interested in this. Their market will be likely first to adopters. My son (25) tells me there is also an app. (parallel to QR) for his Blackberry that allows him to snap a shot of a barcode at Wall Mart (or any other store) and then crawl the web to compare published prices and find out if he can get it cheaper at another brick and mortar or online. How would you like to be talking to the store manager at Best buy and show him your phone to begin negotiating on that new 55" HD.
Again, I can't begin to say how excited I am about this. It is sooo obvious this is a train in the tunnel and not simply daylight. The applications are limited only by the imagination. If I was a print salesman I would be on this like "white on rice" as they say. To me, this is a perfect application for reaching the Gen Y and Gen X crowd. I say we pay attention to what your son is saying. My company is VERY involved with highly personalized direct mail and cross media applications and this technology dovetails perfectly. I see universities as the first place where this application spreads virally 'cause this is not only a cool application but the students view their mobile phones as an entitlement (if not a body part). Let me know if you'd like to discuss further offline. We do a lot of University related printing. It would be interesting to compare notes.

QR Codes - Linking Cell Phone Technology with More Business**
Lindsay Gray, president, AccuLink
QR codes are in wide use internationally and just now catching on in the United States. Get a quick overview of this amazing technology and be the first to deliver new ideas and new printing opportunities to your clients. See how AccuLink transforms a printed business card into a contact management V-card right before your eyes. Take advantage of this and other mind-boggling, profitable applications by incorporating QR codes into your clients' marketing campaign.
I was iffy about attending the PSDA in Chicago but I'd like to see what you're doing and have some face time. I am currently collaborating (investigating capabilities really) with a firm near me that is developing games and apps. for mobile devices and has done several projects for Hollywood movie producers doing prelaunch movie marketing. Quite a group. From Joe's discussion below, looks like augme is well ahead of the curve, which is where the foot-soldier sellers need to be as well.
Lindsay: Have you talked with the folks at Outputlinks? If I'm not mistaken they have significant interest in pushing QR into the US market. You might want to contact Andy Plata - ap@outputlinks.com. He'll probably try to sell you something but he also probably has a lot of info...good luck.
This is exciting technology for marketing and for printers of traditional documents who have not moved into digital printing but need a new value. QR codes could easily be added to transactional documents, product sheets, flyers, booth displays and other printed materials.
This site talks about how Northwest Airlines used QR codes in Tokyo. http://tinyurl.com/c9hpz9

Great video Juan. I love that people are starting to get it!! I've been silently hiring 'screw-ups' (to quote Tom Peters) for years and they happen to be the strongest assets to our organization.
